Asking how something is with "zenmeyang"

Subj. + 怎么样 ?

Introduction

怎么样 (zěnmeyàng) asks "how is it?" — about quality, condition or an opinion. Tack it onto a suggestion and it becomes "how about it?" instead. It sits at the end and needs no verb of its own: 你的工作怎么样?(Nǐ de gōngzuò zěnmeyàng?) — How's work?

怎么样 (zěnmeyàng) is not 怎么 (zěnme):

  • 怎么样 (zěnmeyàng) asks how something is — its quality: 这个菜怎么样?(Zhège cài zěnmeyàng?) — How's this dish?
  • 怎么 (zěnme) asks how you do something — the method: 这个菜怎么做?(Zhège cài zěnme zuò?) — How do you cook this dish?
  • 怎么样 (zěnmeyàng) stands at the end and can be the whole sentence; 怎么 (zěnme) sits before a verb and cannot stand alone.
  • The safe middle answer is 还可以。(Hái kěyǐ.) — Not bad.

Usage Notes

  • 怎么样 (zěnmeyàng) is a question word, so it never takes 吗 (ma). ❌ 你怎么样吗?(Nǐ zěnmeyàng ma?)
  • After a suggestion it is the friendly alternative to 好吗 (hǎo ma): 我们一起吃饭,怎么样?(Wǒmen yìqǐ chī fàn, zěnmeyàng?)
  • Answers run along a familiar scale: 不太好 (bú tài hǎo) → 还可以 (hái kěyǐ) → 还不错 (hái búcuò) → 很好 (hěn hǎo).
  • 样 (yàng) gets swallowed in fast speech, but always write it out.
  • 你怎么样?(Nǐ zěnmeyàng?) between friends means "how are you doing?" — warmer and far more natural than 你好吗?(Nǐ hǎo ma?), which learners overuse.
