Introduction
个 (ge) will get you understood, but it is the blunt instrument. Chinese matches a measure word to what the noun is — long and thin, a person you respect, a room, a packet of something. 一条路 (yì tiáo lù) — a road; 一位老师 (yí wèi lǎoshī) — a teacher.
Overview
Structure: Number + Measure Word + Noun
| Measure word | Use | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 条 (tiáo) | long, thin things | 一条路 (yì tiáo lù) a road |
| 位 (wèi) | people, politely | 一位老师 (yí wèi lǎoshī) a teacher |
| 间 (jiān) | rooms | 一间房间 (yì jiān fángjiān) a room |
| 名 (míng) | people, formally counted | 三名学生 (sān míng xuéshēng) three students |
| 包 (bāo) | a packet of | 两包糖 (liǎng bāo táng) two packets of sugar |
Three measure words for people, three levels of politeness:
- 一个人 (yí ge rén) — a person. Neutral, everyday.
- 一位老师 (yí wèi lǎoshī) — a teacher. Respectful; use it for guests, teachers, customers.
- 三名学生 (sān míng xuéshēng) — three students. Formal and countable, the register of notices and reports.
- ❌ 一位人 (yí wèi rén) — 位 needs a role worth respecting, not the bare word 人.

Usage Notes
- 条 (tiáo) covers anything long and flexible: 路 (lù) road,河 (hé) river,鱼 (yú) fish,裤子 (kùzi) trousers,狗 (gǒu) dog,短信 (duǎnxìn) text message.
- 几位?(Jǐ wèi?) is what a waiter asks at the door. Answering with 个 (ge) is fine — the politeness is theirs to offer, not yours.
- 包 (bāo) is a borrowed measure word: it is the noun "bag" doing duty as a counter, like "a glass of" in English. 杯 (bēi) works the same way.
- The tone of 一 (yī) follows the measure word: 一条 is yì tiáo,一位 is yí wèi,一间 is yì jiān,一包 is yì bāo.
- When you cannot remember the right one, 个 (ge) is always understood. It is worth learning the common ones anyway, because using them is what makes you sound past beginner level.
