Expressing existence in a place with "zai"

Subj. + 在 + Place

Introduction

在 (zài) here is a full verb meaning "to be (somewhere)". It answers the question "where is it?" — the thing comes first and the place comes second: 我在家。(Wǒ zài jiā.) — I'm at home. No 是 (shì) is needed, and adding one is wrong.

Overview

Structure: Subject + 在 (zài) + Place

PatternExampleTranslation
S + 在 + Place我在家。(Wǒ zài jiā.)I'm at home.
S + 不在 + Place他不在办公室。(Tā bú zài bàngōngshì.)He isn't in the office.
S + 在 + Place + 吗?你在学校吗?(Nǐ zài xuéxiào ma?)Are you at school?
S + 在哪儿?我的手机在哪儿?(Wǒ de shǒujī zài nǎr?)Where is my phone?
S + 在 + Noun + 上/里书在桌子上。(Shū zài zhuōzi shàng.)The book is on the table.

在 (zài) vs 有 (yǒu) — same scene, opposite order:

  • starts with the thing, ends with the place: 书桌子上。(Shū zài zhuōzi shàng.) — The book is on the table.
  • starts with the place, ends with the thing: 桌子上书。(Zhuōzi shàng yǒu shū.) — There are books on the table.
  • Use 在 (zài) when the listener already knows the thing and is asking where it is. Use 有 (yǒu) to introduce something new.
  • ❌ 我是在家。(Wǒ shì zài jiā.) — 在 is already the verb; 是 has no job here.

Examples

  • 我在家。

    Wǒ zài jiā.

    I'm at home.

  • 老师在教室里。

    Lǎoshī zài jiàoshì lǐ.

The teacher is in the classroom.

  • 我的手机在哪儿?

    Wǒ de shǒujī zài nǎr?

    Where is my phone?

  • 他不在公司,他在医院。

Tā bú zài gōngsī, tā zài yīyuàn.

He isn't at the company, he's at the hospital.

  • 书在桌子上。

    Shū zài zhuōzi shàng.

The book is on the table.

  • 你现在在哪儿?

    Nǐ xiànzài zài nǎr?

    Where are you now?

Usage Notes

  • No 是 (shì): 在 is the verb of the sentence. 我在家 (Wǒ zài jiā), never 我是在家 (Wǒ shì zài jiā).
  • Negation is 不在 (bú zài) for a present state, and 不 becomes because 在 is fourth tone.
  • Ordinary objects used as places need a position word: 在桌子 (zài zhuōzi shàng), 在包 (zài bāo lǐ). Place nouns do not: 在家 (zài jiā), 在学校 (zài xuéxiào), 在北京 (zài Běijīng).
  • To ask "where", use 在哪儿 (zài nǎr) or 在哪里 (zài nǎlǐ) — the question word simply takes the place slot; the word order does not change.
  • 在 (zài) has a second job as a preposition before a verb — 我在家吃饭。(Wǒ zài jiā chī fàn.) — I eat at home — and a third as a progressive marker — 我在吃饭。(Wǒ zài chī fàn.) — I'm eating. Same character, different slots.
