Indicating location with "zai" before verbs

Subj. + 在 + Place + Verb + Obj.

Introduction

To say where an action happens, the place goes before the verb, introduced by 在 (zài): 我在家吃饭。(Wǒ zài jiā chī fàn.) — I eat at home. English puts the location at the end; Chinese puts it in front. Getting this order wrong is one of the most persistent beginner errors.

Overview

Structure: Subject + 在 (zài) + Place + Verb + Object

PatternExampleTranslation
S + 在 + Place + V + O我在家吃饭。(Wǒ zài jiā chī fàn.)I eat at home.
S + 不在 + Place + V我不在家吃饭。(Wǒ bú zài jiā chī fàn.)I don't eat at home.
S + Time + 在 + Place + V我晚上在家看书。(Wǒ wǎnshang zài jiā kàn shū.)I read at home in the evening.
S + 在哪儿 + V?你在哪儿工作?(Nǐ zài nǎr gōngzuò?)Where do you work?
S + 在 + Noun + 上/里 + V我在床上看手机。(Wǒ zài chuáng shàng kàn shǒujī.)I look at my phone in bed.

Word order — the rule that trips everyone up:

  • ✓ 我在图书馆学习。(Wǒ zài túshūguǎn xuéxí.) — place before the verb.
  • ❌ 我学习在图书馆。(Wǒ xuéxí zài túshūguǎn.) — English order; wrong in Chinese.
  • The full order is Subject → Time → Place → Verb: 我每天(time)在家(place)做饭(verb)。(Wǒ měitiān zài jiā zuòfàn.)
  • Compare with the other 在: 我在家。(Wǒ zài jiā.) — there 在 is the verb, so nothing follows it.

Examples

  • 我在家吃饭。

    Wǒ zài jiā chī fàn.

    I eat at home.

  • 他在图书馆学习。

    Tā zài túshūguǎn xuéxí.

    He studies in the library.

  • 你在哪儿工作?

    Nǐ zài nǎr gōngzuò?

    Where do you work?

  • 我们在咖啡店见面吧。

    Wǒmen zài kāfēidiàn jiànmiàn ba.

Let's meet at the coffee shop.

  • 我每天在公司吃午饭。

Wǒ měitiān zài gōngsī chī wǔfàn.

I eat lunch at the office every day.

  • 我不在家工作。

    Wǒ bú zài jiā gōngzuò.

    I don't work from home.

Usage Notes

  • Negation goes in front of 在: 我不在家吃饭。(Wǒ bú zài jiā chī fàn.) Putting 不 before the verb — 我在家不吃饭 (Wǒ zài jiā bù chī fàn) — changes the meaning to "at home, I don't eat".
  • Time comes before place: 我明天在北京开会。(Wǒ míngtiān zài Běijīng kāihuì.) — I have a meeting in Beijing tomorrow.
  • To ask where, put 在哪儿 (zài nǎr) in the place slot and leave everything else alone: 你在哪儿吃饭?(Nǐ zài nǎr chī fàn?)
  • Ordinary objects still need a position word: 在桌子写字 (zài zhuōzi shàng xiě zì), 在包找 (zài bāo lǐ zhǎo).
  • A small set of verbs takes 在 after the verb instead — 住在北京 (zhù zài Běijīng) — I live in Beijing. Learn these as fixed items; the default is place-before-verb.
